Understanding the Messy Middle of Retirement

Most people expect retirement to feel exciting. After years of responsibilities, schedules, and deadlines, retirement often represents freedom and possibility. And for many people, it does. What often catches people by surprise is that retirement can also feel uncomfortable.

You may find yourself asking:

  • Why do I feel unsettled?

  • Why do I miss parts of my career?

  • Why am I not as clear about what's next as I thought I would be?

If you've experienced these thoughts, you're not alone.

One of the concepts that has shaped my work is the model developed by William Bridges, PhD. He explains that every transition includes an ending, a period in between, and a new beginning. He called the period in between the Neutral Zone. I like to refer to it as the messy middle. It's the space between what was and what will be.

  • The old routines are gone.

  • The familiar identity may be shifting.

  • The future feels uncertain.

And while that can be uncomfortable, it is often where the most important growth takes place. We live in a culture that values certainty and productivity. The messy middle rarely feels productive. Yet it is often where reflection happens. Where new possibilities emerge. Where we begin to imagine a different future.

Retirement is not simply about leaving work. It is about creating a meaningful next chapter. That process takes time. My graduate program mentor once gave me great advice that has stuck with me throughout the years: ‘Don’t fight the process.”

If you find yourself in this season, give yourself permission to be exactly where you are. You don't need to rush to the next chapter. You don't need all the answers today. You simply need to remain open and curious to what is unfolding.
