I Love My Career. So Why Would I Want to Retire?

“I don't think I'll ever retire. I love what I do.” Have you ever said — or thought — something similar?There's an assumption that as we get closer to the traditional retirement age, we should be eagerly counting down the days. Maybe you're not.

You've spent decades building a successful career. You've worked hard to get where you are. You're good at what you do. People value your experience. You make decisions that matter. You solve problems. You have relationships with colleagues you've known for years. And perhaps you

genuinely enjoy your work.

So when someone asks, “When are you going to retire?” you may not have an easy answer. Part of you might like the idea of having more time.More freedom. More flexibility.Time to travel, spend with family, take care of yourself or simply have fewer demands on your calendar. And another part of you isn't ready to give up something that has been such an important and fulfilling part of your life. Both can be true.

The question may not be whether you love your career enough to stay or want retirement enough to leave. There may be a more helpful question: What is your career giving you that you don't want to lose? Maybe it’s:

• Intellectual challenge.

• Being part of a team.

• Leadership.

• The satisfaction of solving difficult problems.

• Mentoring others.

• Knowing that people value your opinion.

• Simply having somewhere you're expected to be every morning.

When you begin identifying what work gives you, you can start thinking differently about retirement. Because leaving your career doesn't necessarily mean leaving behind everything you value about it.

• Do you love mentoring? Where else could that show up?

• Do you thrive on learning? What are you curious about now?

• Do you love bringing people together? How could that strength become part of your next chapter?

• Does contribution matter deeply to you? What would contribution look like if it didn't come with a job title?

Retirement doesn't require you to reject the career you've loved. And you don't have to become an entirely different person when you leave it. You can appreciate what your career has given you while becoming curious about what you want next.

So the next time someone asks:“When are you going to retire?” Maybe you don't need to have the answer yet. Start instead with: What do I want to carry with me when I do?
