Designing Your Lifelong Learning Plan: Your 30-Day Lifelong Learning Jumpstart

One of the questions I hear often from professionals preparing for retirement is:

“I know I want to keep learning—but where do I even begin?”

It’s such a great question. After years of structure, deadlines, and goals, the wide-open space of retirement can feel exciting and overwhelming.

The good news? You don’t need a five-year plan to start learning again.

You just need a little curiosity—and a gentle nudge to get going.

So today, I want to offer you both: a few simple steps and a 30-day learning jumpstart to help you dip your toe into the world of lifelong learning—your way.

Step 1: Get Curious

What are you naturally drawn to? This doesn’t have to be profound or career related. It might be something like:

  • “I’ve always wanted to try watercolor.”

  • “I wonder how podcasts are made.”

  • “I keep hearing about AI—what is it?”

Make a short list of anything that piques your curiosity, even a little.

Step 2: Pick Your Learning Style

Ask yourself:

  • Do I enjoy learning by reading, listening, watching, or doing?

  • Do I prefer structure, or do I like to explore at my own pace?

  • Would I rather learn on my own, or with others?

Knowing your preferences will help you find the right fit, so learning feels energizing—not like homework.

Step 3: Make a Small Commitment

Here’s the trick: Start smaller than you think you should.

Instead of signing up for a 12-week class right away, try this:

  • Read one article on a topic you're curious about

  • Watch one short how-to video

  • Join a free event at your library or local center

You’re building a habit of learning—so let it be light and low-pressure.

Your 30-Day Lifelong Learning Jumpstart

If you're ready to put this into practice, I’ve created a simple 30-day challenge to guide you—one small learning action each day. And, you don’t have to wait until you retire to begin.

Some days you’ll reflect, some days you’ll explore, and some days you’ll try something new. It's a fun, no-pressure way to get inspired and rediscover the joy of learning.
