Curiosity + Conversation = Connection

As we checked into our hotel in Assisi, I noticed a couple—perhaps in their mid-70s—standing out front in their cycling gear. They looked strong, happy, and fully alive. I couldn’t help but wonder what led them to this adventure—riding bicycles through the hills of Tuscany.
The next morning, as fate would have it, they were sitting at the table next to us at breakfast. My curiosity got the best of me, and I struck up a conversation.
They told us they were from Canada and had started serious cycling about 20 years ago. Now, they were on a three-town journey through Tuscany—embracing the challenge, the scenery, and the joy of doing something they loved together.

We chatted for a while, and I shared how much I admired their energy and tenacity. They smiled, their faces lighting up with appreciation. In that moment, something special happened. Through curiosity and conversation, a genuine connection was formed.
Moments like that remind me how powerful curiosity can be, especially in retirement. When we stay curious, we stay connected to people, places, and experiences that make life richer. Sometimes, a simple question or a friendly conversation can open the door to inspiration, new ideas, or even a fresh sense of purpose.
Curiosity sparks conversation. Conversation builds connection. And connection nourishes meaning.
So maybe the next time curiosity tugs at you, lean into it. You never know what story—or what spark—you might discover.
